TRAGEDY IN WHETSTONE BOWERS FIRE: Niel Hesse, 81, passed away today due to extensive burns and smoke inhalation after attempting to stop the blaze, which eventually destroyed his ranch home and 2 other homes in the Whetestone area Monday night. Niels son Will Russell was also present, and he has minor burns and smoke inhalation. 28 acres were burned in total.
The two were using a grinder when sparks started the fire, according to Cochise County Sheriff's Office - Mark J. Dannels Sheriff
“As the men attempted to contain the fire, both received serious burn and smoke injuries resulting in transport to Tucson hospitals for care,” the CCSO said in a release.
Daughter Caty RusseIl speaking for the family wanted to give a message of thanks and appreciation to all the first responders who helped prevent the fire from getting worse. They are amazing heroes who saved so many homes and so many people.
Our hearts and prayers go out to this family during this very emotional time.

15-YEAR OLD DRIVER RESPONSIBLE FOR PALOMINAS WRECK: On Tuesday April 23, 2024 Cochise County Sheriff’s Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Highway 80 and Kings Road near Douglas.
The vehicle failed to yield and began travelling at speeds of 90 to 100 miles per hour down Hwy 80, through the Bisbee traffic circle before continuing down Highway 92.
The Vehicle attempted to hide in the housing area off of San Jose but came back out.
Tire deflation devices were set up but the vehicle kept swerving around them. While on 92 towards the bridge headed into Palominas, the vehicle swerved to miss set spikes and rolled.
The driver, 15 year old US Citizen who is also listed as a runaway juvenile, Jesus Rios of Tucson and his 16 year old US Citizen Faviana Montes Deoca, were discovered to be transporting one undocumented immigrant.
All three subjects were transported as a precaution to a local hospital as no one was wearing seat belts.
CIT was on scene to take case and charge the US Citizens for smuggling, both are being booked into jail at this time and will be charged as adults.
The vehicle was confirmed stolen out of Pima County.
This investigation is being continued by the Cochise County Sheriff's Office - Mark J. Dannels Sheriff
