Some Monday mornings arrive wide open, the road ahead clearly marked. Others look more like this, layers of uncertainty, familiar landmarks hidden beneath a restless ceiling of clouds.
Yet the mountains haven’t disappeared. Their highest ridges have risen above the confusion, waiting in the light while everything below slowly finds its way through.
That may be worth remembering as we begin another week. When the view becomes clouded, we’re often tempted to believe the way forward has vanished with it. But uncertainty only limits how far we can see, not how far we can go.
Keep climbing.
Keep moving.
Trust what you know is still there, even when you can’t see it all.
Sooner or later, the clouds will loosen their grip and the familiar landscape will return...
...and you may just discover that you’ve already risen above much of what was once an obstacle.

COCHISE COUNTY UNEMPLOYMENT RISES TO HIGHEST FIRST-HALF LEVEL SINCE 2020
Newly released labor market data from the Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity indicates that Cochise County experienced a weaker job market during the first half of 2026, with unemployment reaching its highest first-half average since 2020.
From January through June 2026, Cochise County’s unadjusted unemployment rate averaged 6.0%, an increase from 5.0% during the same period in 2025. The county’s unemployment rate also exceeded both the Arizona average of 4.7% and the national average of 4.4%, reflecting a sharper slowdown in the local labor market.
The report shows that Cochise County’s labor force averaged approximately 45,630 workers during the first six months of the year, down nearly 5% compared to the same period in 2025. Employment also declined, averaging about 42,892 workers, while the number of unemployed residents increased by more than 15%, rising from approximately 2,375 to 2,739 people.
Unemployment increased in every major community across Cochise County compared to one year ago.
Year-to-date unemployment rates through June 2026 include:
• Willcox: 10.7% (highest in the county)
• Huachuca City: 10.0%
• Douglas: 9.3%
• Bisbee: 8.3%
• Benson: 7.3%
• Sierra Vista: 5.8%
• Tombstone: 0.5% (lowest in the county)
The trend became more pronounced as the year progressed. Cochise County’s unemployment rate increased from 5.4% in April to 5.8% in May, before reaching 6.9% in June. During those same months in 2025, unemployment ranged from 4.7% to 5.4%.
Although current conditions remain well below the severe unemployment levels experienced during the 2020 pandemic, the latest figures suggest that hiring has slowed and employment levels have declined after several years of relatively stable labor market conditions.
Economic officials say the second half of 2026 will provide a clearer picture of whether these trends represent a temporary slowdown or a longer-term shift in Cochise County’s economy.

A 17-year veteran of the department and a 20-year veteran of the fire service, Chief Dever has dedicated his career to serving the Sierra Vista community. Throughout his time with the department, he has risen through the ranks as a firefighter/paramedic, engineer, captain, battalion chief, deputy chief, and now fire chief.
Chief Dever succeeds Brian Jones, who recently retired after 30 years of distinguished service with Sierra Vista Fire & Medical Services. His promotion was officially announced by City Manager Chuck Potucek during Tuesday’s Sierra Vista City Council meeting.
As he steps into this leadership role, Chief Dever says he is grateful for the mentorship of Chief Jones and hopes to build upon the strong foundation established by previous fire chiefs while bringing his own vision to the department.
In addition to his years of frontline and leadership experience, Chief Dever recently earned a Ph.D. in Fire Administration and Emergency Management. His research focused on firefighter health, wellness, and resilience, examining how workplace culture impacts the physical and mental well-being of Arizona firefighters. The recommendations from his work are already being shared statewide through the Arizona Fire Chiefs Association, helping shape best practices across Arizona.
City Manager Chuck Potucek expressed confidence in the department’s future, stating that Chief Dever is well prepared to continue the department’s tradition of outstanding service while leading Sierra Vista Fire & Medical Services into its next chapter.

After serving the community, Cactus Kitchen has officially announced that it has permanently closed its doors.
On Saturday, July 25, 2026, owner Rudy shared that, due to unforeseen circumstances, Cactus Kitchen has ceased operations.
In his announcement, Rudy expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the community, thanking every customer who supported the restaurant throughout the years. He shared his appreciation for the loyalty, kindness, and patronage that allowed Cactus Kitchen to serve so many residents, friends, and families.
The announcement reads in part:
“Due to unforeseen circumstances, we are permanently closed. We sincerely thank you for your business, loyalty, and support over the years. We truly appreciate every customer who chose us, and we wish you all the best.”
The closure marks the end of another local business that has been a part of the community, and many customers are reflecting on the meals, conversations, and memories they shared there over the years.
We extend our sincere thanks to Rudy and everyone at Cactus Kitchen for their service to the community, and we wish them nothing but the very best in whatever comes next.
