END OF WATCH: It is with profound sadness that the AZDPS announces the loss of two members of our Aviation Bureau who were killed in the line of duty on February 4, 2026, when Ranger 56 crashed while responding to an active shooter incident in Flagstaff.
On Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at approximately 10:17 p.m., an AZDPS Bell 407 helicopter, Ranger 56, crashed while responding to an active shooter incident at the request of the Flagstaff Police Department. Both crew members on board were fatally injured.
After notification of next of kin, AZDPS is releasing the names of the fallen:
Pilot Robert Bruce Skankey, Badge #11056
State Trooper/Paramedic Hunter R. Bennett, Badge #11215
Pilot Skankey joined the AZDPS as a Rotary Wing Pilot on May 8, 2021, and was assigned to Western Air Rescue. On June 8, 2024, he was promoted to Aviation Supervisor, remaining at Western Air Rescue. Pilot Skankey served in the United States Marine Corps (USMC), joining in 1988 and retiring in July 2010. During his military career, Pilot Skankey attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and served as a Pilot in Command, Presidential Support Pilot, and an Operations/Safety Officer. He was highly decorated during his career.
Following his military retirement, Pilot Skankey flew for Air Methods Corporation in Kingman as an Emergency Medical Service Pilot. Pilot Skankey had flown over 5,100 hours prior to joining the AZDPS. In 2016, he earned a Master of Administration, with an emphasis in Leadership, from Northern Arizona University. While serving with the USMC, Pilot Skankey completed an Aviation Safety Officer’s Course and graduated from the Naval Postgraduate School. Pilot Skankey attended Brigham Young University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electronic Engineering Technology in 1988.
Pilot Skankey was born on May 2, 1964. Pilot Skankey married Tjiske Skankey, and together they proudly raised their son Robert C. (Melanie), son Bryce (Tonya), daughter Kirstin (Joshua), and son Samuel.
State Trooper/Paramedic Hunter R. Bennett
State Trooper/Paramedic Bennett joined the AZDPS on June 11, 2022, as a cadet state trooper. On January 13, 2023, after graduating from the Arizona Law Enforcement Academy (Class #558), he was assigned to work nights in the Highway Patrol Division, Metro Patrol Bureau District 20. Trooper Bennett graduated as the top overall cadet, earning the highest scores in both Academics and Physical Fitness.
In April 2024, Trooper Bennett transferred to Western Air Rescue in Kingman to serve as a Trooper/Paramedic. He served a temporary duty assignment as a Recruiter in the Human Resources Bureau’s Sworn Recruiting Unit in August 2025 before being designated as a fully qualified AZDPS Air Rescue Paramedic.
State Trooper/Paramedic Bennett was an Arizona Department of Health Services and National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians certified Paramedic. Before joining the AZDPS, he worked in the 911 system on an ambulance for American Medical Response. State Trooper/Paramedic Bennett was born on February 1, 1998, in Hartford, Connecticut, to Jeff and Renee Bennett. He has one brother, Devon Bennett. He was in the Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University, where he double majored in Business and Criminal Justice and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2020. He also minored in Homeland Security.
On October 21, 2024, State Trooper/Paramedic Bennett married the love of his life, Breanna, in Hawaii. They were high school sweethearts and had been together for 12 years.
The Department respectfully asks that the families of Pilot Skankey and Trooper Bennett be afforded privacy as they navigate this unimaginable loss.
The cause of the crash remains under active investigation. AZDPS is cooperating with investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board and will release verified information when it is available.

🚨 TRUST BROKEN: Former Banner-University Nurse Arrested 🚨
A former nurse at Banner-University Medical Center in Tucson, AZ is facing serious criminal charges after a disturbing incident involving an incapacitated patient.
According to police, Jadd Gebrial Sarah has been arrested and charged with sexual abuse, aggravated assault, and abuse of a vulnerable adult. Investigators say surveillance video captured Sarah entering a patient’s hospital room while the patient was hospitalized for seizures and unable to resist, then engaging in inappropriate contact.
Hospital staff reported the incident, prompting a police investigation. During questioning, Sarah allegedly admitted he “screwed up” but could not explain his actions.
What makes this case even more troubling for Southern Arizona residents is Sarah’s local history. He was a former resident of Sierra Vista, Arizona, and previously worked for the Bisbee Fire Department, the old Sierra Vista Hospital, and Arizona Ambulance — positions built on public trust and patient care. Sarah also attended Cochise College where he studied Nursing.
The investigation remains ongoing as Sarah awaits his next court appearance.

(UPDATE): The Sierra Vista Police Department is currently investigating the death of a male individual discovered at a homeless encampment near Walmart. This incident occurred on Thursday, February 5, 2026, and is being treated as a homicide. The investigation remains active, and authorities have asked the community to avoid the area while officers and detectives conduct their work.

“SVPD investigating death of homeless man
The Sierra Vista Police Department is investigating the death of a homeless man after discovering his body in the field west of Walmart on Thursday.
SVPD officers and detectives responded to a report of a deceased subject at about 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5. They located the deceased man near a tent at an apparent homeless camp. Due to the nature of the death, it is currently being investigated as a homicide. The cause of death will be determined via autopsy by the Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner.
The identify of the deceased will not be released until next of kin is notified. Investigators are still working to locate next of kin.
Further information will be released when more details can be shared.
This is an active investigation, and detectives are following up on several leads. If anyone has information on this case, please contact SVPD at (520) 803-3555.”

🚨 TRAFFIC ALERT – SIERRA VISTA 🚨
An accident occurred February 5, 2026 at E. Highway 90 Sierra Vista, AZ, in front of Target entrance. First responders were on scene and officers worked the incident.
The vehicles involved were a Toyota Scion and a Toyota Tacoma. The driver of the Toyota Tacoma was heading West on Hwy. 90 when they ran a red light and collided with the Toyota Scion who as turning left off of Hwy. 90 into the shopping center. The driver of the Tacoma was cited for a red light violation.
Medics responded and evaluated individuals on scene. One person was transported to Canyon Vista Medical Center for treatment.
Traffic was impacted during the response, with westbound Highway 90 routed through the Target parking lot. Drivers were advised to avoid the area and expect delays.

🚨ARREST MADE IN FEB. 2, 2026 WALMART BURGLARY 🚨
Sierra Vista, AZ — An arrest has been made in connection with the February 2, 2026 vehicle burglary that occurred in the Walmart parking lot in Sierra Vista, thanks in large part to tips from the public.
Sierra Vista Police Department has confirmed that Shawn Hodges, 46, of Whetstone, Arizona, was arrested in relation to this incident.
Authorities also want to make it very clear to the public that the second individual initially identified in surveillance images was investigated and determined to have NO involvement or ties to this burglary.
Below is the full press release from the Sierra Vista Police Department:
“Public tips lead to arrest of Feb. 2 burglary suspect
On Tuesday evening, the Sierra Vista Police Department arrested a suspect for a vehicle burglary that occurred on Monday, Feb. 2, in the local Walmart parking lot after members of the public provided tips that led to the suspect’s identification.
SVPD responded to a report of a vehicle burglary at Walmart at about 10:30 p.m. on Monday. The victim reported someone had entered their vehicle and stolen personal property, including a firearm.
SVPD detectives reviewed Walmart surveillance video and located two individuals of interest in the case. Following the release of surveillance photos, members of the public provided valuable tips that led to the positive identification of two men. The investigation determined one of the men had no apparent knowledge of the burglary that took place.
On Tuesday at about 6:20 p.m., SVPD detectives, with assistance from the Huachuca City Police Department and the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the residence of the primary suspect, where he was contacted and placed under arrest.
The suspect was booked into Cochise County Jail for burglary, theft, and misconduct with weapons.
“We appreciate the public’s help in identifying the suspect,” SVPD PIO Cpl. Jené Seage says. “It’s a testament to the strong partnership between the police department and the residents we serve.”
