LIVE: A SPECIAL MOMENT FOR BISBEE: AFTER 8 YEARS, IT’S TIME TO BUILD! 🚧

BISBEE, Ariz. — CoolFMLive is LIVE in Lowell this morning as the City of Bisbee celebrates a milestone years in the making — the official groundbreaking for the Lavender Pit pathway project!

Today, August 24, community members, local leaders and project partners are gathering at the Northern Erie Street entrance to mark the beginning of construction on a project that has been eight years in the making.

What started with the first conversations about the path in 2018 has now reached an exciting moment: construction is officially moving forward.

- A safer connection for bicyclists
- A dedicated route for pedestrians
- A project focused on safety and community
- A new connection through one of Bisbee’s most recognizable areas

Getting to this moment was no small undertaking. The federally funded project required coordination between numerous agencies, partners, donors and community members, while navigating the complexities of building along a state highway and on Freeport-owned property.

Through challenges, delays and rising costs, the vision remained alive — and today that persistence is being celebrated.

This project also carries a deeper meaning. A community member lost their life along this stretch of highway, serving as a powerful reminder of why creating safer connections for people walking and riding through this area matters.

Eight years. One vision. And today, Bisbee breaks ground.

Congratulations to the City of Bisbee, Bisbee Bikeways, ADOT, project partners, donors, volunteers and everyone who continued working to make this day possible.

CoolFMLive is proud to be here for this special moment as Bisbee begins building toward a safer, more connected future.

NEW DETAILS: TUCSON POLICE RECRUIT WAS FIGHTING MASKED HOME INVADERS WHEN SHOT‼️

TUCSON, Ariz. — New information is providing a clearer picture of what happened inside the home of 23-year-old Tucson Police recruit Carlos Ramirez before he was shot and killed.

According to newly released court documents, Ramirez’s fiancée told investigators she heard banging outside their bedroom during the early morning hours of August 19. Ramirez entered the bedroom and told her two masked men were inside their home before reportedly confronting and fighting the intruders.

During the struggle, gunfire erupted.

Ramirez was shot in the chest and died from his injuries. His 23-year-old fiancée, a Pima County corrections officer, was shot in the shoulder. She and her unborn baby survived.

Investigators say surveillance footage captured a gray SUV in Ramirez’s neighborhood before the shooting. Additional video and visible tattoos reportedly helped detectives identify 39-year-old Santiago Jorge Rogers, who was later arrested by a SWAT team.

33-year-old Alex James Barnett remains wanted on a first-degree murder warrant as investigators continue working to determine everyone involved in the deadly home invasion.

Ramirez previously served as a corrections officer before entering the Tucson Police Academy and was scheduled to graduate August 27 — just days after his death.

The investigation remains active. CoolFMLive will continue following this case and provide updates as additional confirmed information becomes available.

❤️ COMMUNITY SUP

❤️ COMMUNITY SUPPORT: LET’S STAND WITH GLORIA OLSON ❤️

SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. — A local family that has spent years giving back to others is now facing an incredibly difficult journey, and our community has an opportunity to surround them with support.

Gloria Olson, one of the owners of Wicked Limitz, is currently battling Stage 4 peritoneal cancer. According to a GoFundMe organized by her daughter, Krista York, Gloria was diagnosed in February 2026 and is now facing an aggressive fight that requires her to travel out of state for treatment.

For many in Sierra Vista, Gloria and her family are familiar faces. Beyond their local business, Gloria has dedicated countless hours to helping others through A Tree 4 Christmas, an effort that has helped hundreds of families during the holiday season. Now, after years of showing up for others, her family is asking the community to show up for her. ❤️

Gloria’s husband, Rod, has stepped into the role of her primary caretaker and is staying by her side throughout this journey. The family says the costs associated with out-of-state treatment — including medical expenses, travel, lodging and everyday needs — have created a significant financial burden.

A GoFundMe has been established to help Gloria and Rod as they navigate the road ahead.

Every contribution can make a difference, but support doesn’t have to come only through a donation. Sharing Gloria’s story, offering words of encouragement and keeping this family in your thoughts and prayers can mean just as much.

This is one of those moments when we can remind a local family that they do not have to face a difficult chapter without the support of the community around them.

Let’s rally around Gloria, Rod and the entire Olson family and show them just how much Sierra Vista cares.

DONATE OR SHARE GLORIA’S GOFUNDME:

Monday morning arriv

Monday morning arrives with August beginning its final march toward September.

By now, the month may have left a little dust on our boots. Plans shifted. Energy faded. A few days probably wandered off without accomplishing much of anything, apparently taking our motivation along with them.

But the week ahead doesn't need a grand performance.

This Sierra Vista sunset offers a better strategy. Beneath all that weight the light found an opening. It stretched beneath the clouds, spilled across the grasslands, and gave the day one final blaze before surrendering the horizon.

And that might be all we need as well.

Find the opening.
Finish the task waiting longest.
Make the call.
Take the walk.
Offer kindness.
Move one stubborn thing from “someday” to “done.”

August still has eight days left with plenty of light ahead.

Have a great Monday, a productive week, and polish off the month of August on our own terms.

Let’s finish the month glowing.

🚨 BREAKING: SECON

🚨 BREAKING: SECOND SIERRA VISTA TEEN ARRESTED IN TUCSON HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION 🚨

TUCSON, Ariz. — A second Sierra Vista teenager has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a 33-year-old man in Tucson.

Derek Walker Poff, 19, of Sierra Vista, was arrested at his Sierra Vista home Friday, August 21, as investigators continued working the homicide case involving the death of Eddie Lopez.

Poff’s arrest comes after Angel Francisco Valenzuela, 18, of Sierra Vista, was arrested Wednesday, August 19, in connection with the same investigation. CoolFMLive previously reported on Valenzuela’s arrest.

Lopez was found fatally shot near the area of 29th Street and Craycroft Road in Tucson on Monday, August 17.

Following his arrest, Poff was transported to Tucson and made his first court appearance Saturday. He is facing charges of first-degree murder, armed robbery and discharging a firearm within city limits. His bond was set at $1 million.

Investigators allege the deadly encounter stemmed from an arranged transaction involving the sale of a handgun. Court records allege the transaction turned into a planned robbery, during which Lopez was shot multiple times.

Valenzuela is also facing charges of first-degree murder, armed robbery and discharging a firearm within city limits. His bond was previously set at $1.1 million.

Both teens remain in custody as the case moves forward.

The charges are allegations, and both defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

CoolFMLive will continue following this developing case and provide additional information as it becomes available.

COCHISE COUNTY, Ariz. — CoolFMLive is taking a major step into the future of local radio!

CoolFMLive LLC is excited to announce that it has secured funding for the planned acquisition of 97.7 FM, 104.1 FM in Benson/Sierra Vista and 96.5 FM in Douglas from Red Rock Media, pending final approval by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

For CoolFMLive owner Todd Ryen, this is the realization of a dream decades in the making.

"I cannot thank each and everyone of you enough! You've made Cody's year! I'm still in shock. You've helped make my son's birthday one for the books. Thank you to everyone who was generous enough to bring him a gift. He loves them all! It's 9 PM and he's still playing! HERO BEHIND THE WHEE

HERO BEHIND THE WHEEL: BUS DRIVER’S QUICK ACTIONS HELP GET STUDENTS TO SAFETY

PALOMINAS, Ariz. — Palominas School District bus driver Tina Rice Carbajal is being recognized for her quick actions after helping five students safely escape a school bus moments before it went up in flames Monday, August 17.

Tina has spent 11 years as a school bus driver, including three years with Palominas School District on the same route. She says she had never experienced anything like this.

Near the end of her route, with only three stops remaining, Tina noticed an unusual smell and felt that the brakes didn’t feel right. Trusting her instincts, she pulled over in a safe location and radioed for another bus.

“I knew something wasn’t right so I radioed in to let them know. I then found a safe place to park it so they can come get it. It began to smoke, then we heard a loud explosion from rear of bus. That’s when I had students evacuate bus.” — Tina Rice Carbajal

Tina quickly got all five students off the bus. The bus then became engulfed in flames, with three explosions occurring during the incident.

Everyone made it out safely, and no injuries were reported.

Tina also credits nearby neighbors who came running to help comfort the children and provided juice for a diabetic child.

“Humble…I just did my job and so thankful we got out safely,” Tina said.

About five minutes later, another bus arrived. Tina got aboard with the children and personally finished the route, making sure they made it safely home.

The following day, Coronado Elementary had a counselor available for the students, and Tina was there to help reassure the children, including one younger student who was still processing what happened.

Chef Tony from Sierra Vista Melty wanted to give a $50 gift card to her (Pictured) And the Palominas School District also recognized Tina this past week for her actions.

Tina may humbly say she was simply doing her job, but her experience, instincts and quick response helped get five children safely away from a dangerous situation before it became much worse.

Thank you, Tina — and thank you to the neighbors who stepped up when these children needed you most. ❤️

This positive community spotlight is brought to you by Desert Rv, Vista Pros Heating & Cooling, Ed Morse Nissan Sierra Vista, and American Southwest Credit Union proudly supporting the people who make our communities stronger.
