According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the incident began during a traffic stop on westbound Interstate 10 near Benson. DPS has stated that the driver was stopped for speeding, allegedly provided a false identity, and was found to have extraditable felony warrants. DPS further reported that the driver resisted arrest, returned to the vehicle, and began driving away while a trooper was partially inside the vehicle.

The trooper discharged his firearm, and the driver, later identified as 39-year-old Berkleigh Jade Bond of Wichita Falls, Texas, died at the scene. The trooper was injured during the incident and was treated before being released.

The family’s attorney’s announcement represents the family’s perspective and the beginning of a civil investigation. It is not a court finding or determination of liability. Likewise, the Arizona Department of Public Safety’s investigation and any potential legal proceedings remain ongoing.

It's Sunday, the 5th of July.

The barbecue pits have cooled enough to be cleaned. Hangovers linger, but they don't stop the routines of another morning. Burnt firework casings litter rural roads, trash bags fill with aluminum cans and chicken bones, and conversations begin with chuckles, rolled eyes, and the occasional, "Did I really say that?"

The dogs have finally settled into the welcome silence. My own Sadie has long since stopped trembling with each crack of the fireworks. Yesterday's laughter, awkward moments, and shared celebrations are already finding their place in that growing archive of memories we all carry with us.

But yesterday never happens without 'them'.

We don't gather around the grill. We don't wave our flags. We don't sit beneath exploding skies with friends and family. The 5th of July simply becomes another Sunday.

Sure, our dogs would appreciate that quieter reality. Our heads wouldn't ache from celebrating a little too enthusiastically. Cleanup would certainly be easier... because there would have been nothing to clean up in the first place.

None of it happens without the extraordinary men and women who gave us 'yesterday'.

Freedom has never been free. It has always carried a price paid by people willing to place something greater than themselves above their own tomorrow. Some came home carrying memories that never left them. Some never came home at all.

Every Independence Day is, in many ways, a gift handed to us by those who surrendered the chance to celebrate another one themselves.

I hope I never become so accustomed to our freedoms that I forget what it took to preserve them.

To every service member, every Gold Star family, and every soul whose sacrifice made yesterday possible...
