🚨📚 SVUSD GOVERNING BOARD VOTES 4-1 TO CLOSE VILLAGE MEADOWS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL 📚🚨

During tonight’s Sierra Vista Unified School District Governing Board meeting on May 12, the board voted 4-1 to permanently close Village Meadows Elementary School beginning with the 2026–2027 school year.

As part of the district’s restructuring plan, students currently attending Village Meadows Elementary School will transition to Pueblo Del Sol Elementary School for the 2026–2027 school year. The Bella Vista Elementary School will also close and consolidate into another school.

The decision marks the third school closure under the Sierra Vista Unified School District for the 2026-2027 school and beyond, following previous district restructuring efforts that also included the closure of Joyce Clark Middle School.

District officials cited ongoing enrollment declines, financial considerations, and long-term district planning as major factors behind the decision. The vote followed board discussion and public input regarding the future of the school and the district’s efforts to consolidate resources across campuses.

Village Meadows Elementary has served generations of Sierra Vista families and students, making the decision an emotional one for many parents, staff members, alumni, and community members who attended Tuesday night’s meeting in Sierra Vista.

Additional details regarding student transitions, staffing impacts, transportation, boundary adjustments, and future plans for the Village Meadows campus are expected to be discussed further by district leadership in the coming months.

Tonight’s vote serves as the final approval for the school’s closure and transition plan.

⭐️🚔 Local Teen Honored After Quick Actions Help Infant in Distress ⭐️🚔

Today Chief Hiser and Sheriff Dannels made a surprise visit to Buena High School to recognize student Tobias Chastain.

Last week, Tobias was walking through his neighborhood and followed up on something he observed didn’t seem right after he witnessed an infant that was crying.

Tobias called 9-1-1 and stayed until police and fire personnel arrived. The infant was in need of care and Tobias’ actions prevented a situation that could have turned tragic.

He was given challenge coins by Chief Hiser and Sheriff Dannels for being a caring, model citizen. Thank you Tobias, job well done!

**UPDATE: From Cochise County Sheriff's Office - Mark J. Dannels Sheriff- Multi-Vehicle Accident Investigation

On Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at approximately 9:36 am, a multi-vehicle accident was reported near E Fremont and N San Diego Street in Tombstone.

As a result of this accident, Fremont Street was closed in the immediate area, with traffic being diverted onto Camino San Rafael around the crash site and back onto Fremont Street (Highway 80 in that location) for an approximate two-hour time period.

The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office was contacted to complete the investigation, as one of the drivers in this incident was identified as Mayor Dusty Escapule.

The initial investigation indicates that a 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 attempted to make a left turn onto Camino San Rafael before being struck by a 2023 Dodge Ram 3500 van, which was westbound on Fremont (Highway 80), resulting in the van veering into a parked car and the truck going off the shoulder of the roadway before coming to rest.

The driver of the truck, Mayor Escapule, was transported by ground to Canyon Vista Medical Center for treatment of injuries, while the van driver was not injured and did not require additional medical assistance on scene.

The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team responded to provide in-depth investigation details, and the Sheriff’s Office is continuing the investigation.**

🚨 TOMBSTONE MAYOR REPORTEDLY INVOLVED IN SERIOUS HEAD-ON CRASH 🚨

CoolFMLive has received reports of a serious head-on vehicle collision in Tombstone near the fire department, in the area of Camino San Rafael and San Diego Street, with impacts extending toward the CSR/80 corridor.

Initial information indicates the crash involves a truck and a van. Tombstone Mayor Dusty Escapule has reportedly been involved in the collision.

Emergency crews are currently responding to the scene. Motorists are urged to avoid the area, including Camino San Rafael, San Diego Street, and portions near CSR/80, and use alternate routes to allow first responders safe access.

At this time, details remain limited and the situation is still developing. We are hoping for no serious injuries and will continue to provide updates as additional confirmed information becomes available.

🚨📚 NEW STUDENT SAFETY REPORTING SYSTEM NOW AVAILABLE ACROSS COCHISE COUNTY 📚🚨

A new tool aimed at helping keep students safe is now officially available throughout Cochise County.

SafeVoice Cochise is an anonymous reporting system designed to allow students, parents, families, school staff, and community members to quickly and safely report concerns involving student safety—including bullying, threats, suspicious activity, self-harm concerns, or situations where someone may need immediate help or support.

Officials say the system is completely anonymous and is monitored 24/7 by trained crisis counselors through the Sandy Hook Promise Crisis Center. Reports are reviewed and then routed to the appropriate school or public safety team to ensure concerns are addressed as quickly as possible.

County leaders say the goal of the program is to encourage early intervention and create another layer of protection for students across Cochise County schools.

“If something doesn’t feel right, say something.”

Community members are encouraged to use the system anytime they believe a student may be in danger, struggling, or in need of assistance.
