‼️ New Details in False Report of Shooting near Mescal Tuesday night ‼️

CoolFMLive has followed up directly with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department regarding the incident reported last night in the Mescal area — and we’ve now confirmed that this was NOT a shooting incident.

According to officials, the call was actually related to a mental health situation, where mention of a possible shooting was made during the initial report. However, deputies confirmed there was no active shooter and no shooting took place.

This clarification comes after multiple outlets (Not Coolfmlive)— citing early scanner traffic — reported that a shooting had occurred and that a suspect was detained. While law enforcement did respond quickly and secure the scene out of caution, those initial reports were based on unconfirmed information during an evolving situation.

At this time, the situation has been safely resolved, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

🚨 Names Confirmed After Fatal Friday Collision in St. David, AZ 🚨

Arizona Department of Public Safety has released new details regarding a tragic three-vehicle collision that occurred the afternoon of Friday March 20, 2026 in Benson.

At approximately 4:55 p.m. on March 20, 2026, a serious crash took place on westbound State Route 80 near milepost 302.6.

According to officials, a white 2025 Chevrolet Equinox traveling westbound swerved to the right for unknown reasons, then overcorrected to the left—crossing the centerline and striking a 2007 Kia Rondo head-on, which was traveling eastbound. The westbound vehicle then continued forward and was struck on the passenger side by a 2021 Toyota 4Runner, also traveling eastbound.

Victims Identified:
🕊️ Angelica Ruiz-Burruel, 54, of Douglas, pronounced deceased at the scene
🕊️ Mary Graf Nelson, 64, of Idaho, a passenger in the westbound vehicle, later passed away at the hospital

The driver of the Kia Rondo was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver and passenger of the westbound Chevrolet Equinox were airlifted for treatment. The driver of the Toyota 4Runner was also flown for medical care, while additional occupants in that vehicle sustained minor injuries.

Officials have stated that impairment is not suspected in this crash.

Multiple agencies responded and assisted at the scene, including:

• Arizona Department of Transportation
• HCI Ambulance
• Saint David Fire Department
• Benson Fire Department

Sierra Vista Unified School District No. 68 (SVUSD) has issued an important update following its Spring Break enrollment review.

Superintendent Romo has announced plans to recommend the closure of Joyce Clark Middle School, effective the 2026–2027 school year.

The decision comes after a careful analysis of declining student enrollment numbers and projections across the district. Officials say the recommendation aligns with the same criteria and process previously used to identify an elementary school for closure — and is being described as a fiscally responsible measure necessary to ensure the district’s long-term stability.

Below is the message from Superintendent Romo:

“Dear SVUSD Staff and Families,

I am writing to provide an important update following our Spring Break enrollment review. Based on our current enrollment numbers and projections, we are anticipating a continued decline in student enrollment across the district.

A Message from Superintendent Romo

After careful analysis, and in alignment with the criteria and process previously used to identify an elementary school for closure, I will be recommending the closure of Joyce Clark Middle School beginning in the 2026–2027 school year.

This is not a decision we ever hoped to face. However, it is a fiscally responsible action necessary to ensure the long-term stability of our district. I want to be very clear—this decision weighs heavily, and we understand the significant impact it may have on our students, families, staff, and community.

As we move forward, it is critical that we engage our stakeholders thoughtfully, with transparency, compassion, and a shared focus on sustaining SVUSD for the future.

To begin this process, we will be hosting a Governing Board Work Session on Thursday, March 26 at 5:30 p.m., where I will formally present my recommendation. During this Work Session, we will also share details about where Joyce Clark Middle School students would attend for the 2026–2027 school year.

Following this meeting, a Town Hall will be scheduled prior to or on April 7. The exact date will be determined during the Work Session.
