FLOCK CAMERA DAMAGED

FLOCK CAMERA DAMAGED IN APACHE JUNCTION AS BENSON INVESTIGATES SIMILAR VANDALISM 🚨

ARIZONA β€” An incident involving a Flock Safety license plate reader in Apache Junction is drawing local attention following the recent intentional destruction of Flock cameras in Benson.

In Apache Junction, Pinal County resident Ed Kahle says he intentionally used his work truck to bend the pole of a Flock license plate-reading camera near Superstition Boulevard and Goldfield Road, leaving the camera pointed toward the sky and inoperable.

Kahle stated concerns about surveillance and privacy motivated his actions. He acknowledged what he did was illegal and was arrested that night. According to the report, Kahle is facing a felony criminal damage charge.

The incident comes as Benson Police investigate intentional damage to a license plate reader within the last week.

Most specifically, on Sunday evening, August 9, a Flock camera pole near Ocotillo Road and Jackson Street in Benson, near the Interstate 10 entrance, was cut down. Benson Police Chief Greg Volker confirmed the damage was intentional.

However, there is an important distinction between the two cases.

While Kahle has publicly explained why he damaged the Apache Junction camera, Benson Police have not determined a motive for the vandalism there. Chief Volker said investigators do not yet know whether the cameras were targeted because of opposition to Flock technology or whether the damage could have been retaliation by someone affected by the cameras.

The incidents come amid a larger debate across Arizona over automated license plate readers and the balance between law enforcement capabilities, public safety and individual privacy.

Several Arizona jurisdictions have recently reconsidered their use of the technology. Pinal County announced it would not renew its Flock contract, while Chandler recently announced it was discontinuing its use of 40 Flock cameras.

Meanwhile, Benson officials have defended their use of the cameras. Chief Volker says the Benson Police Department maintains a strict policy limiting their use to circumstances involving probable cause for a crime, federally reported missing persons, felony warrants or stolen vehicles.

As the debate surrounding Flock cameras continues across Arizona, the recent incidents in Apache Junction and Benson demonstrate just how contentious the technology has become.

πŸ’¬ What are your thoughts? Should communities continue using Flock license plate readers as a law enforcement tool, or do you believe the privacy concerns outweigh their benefits?

CoolFMLive will continue following the Benson investigation and provide additional information as it becomes available.

THANK YOU SSVECβ€ΌοΏ½

THANK YOU SSVEC‼️Not all heroes wear capes; sometimes it's hard hats and a little voltage in your blood.

Powerful straight-line winds between 70 and 100 mph came through a swath of Willcox on Monday night, August 10th, causing extensive damage and leaving many without power due to numerous downed power lines. One resident of 30 years noted she has never seen anything like it, and an SSVEC foreman remarked that he had never seen so much devastation concentrated in one area during his entire career.

SSVEC reported approximately 60 downed poles, including transmission lines. Fortunately, electric company crews came from all over to help, including neighboring Arizona co-ops such as Mohave Electric, Trico, and Graham. Additionally, AEPCO contributed a generator to keep the town's water system running.

As SSVEC CEO Jason Bowling told Coolfmlive , engineering staff, clerks, member service reps, the marketing team, and the executive team have all pitched in to check on members, deliver water, and feed the crews. This was an incredible storm, but it has been matched by an incredible community stepping up to rebuild.

Thank you all for your hard work and dedication!

Work update for Wednesday August 12th from SSVEC:

Crews made strong progress Tuesday, restoring power to many members affected by the outage. We know how difficult it has been to be without service, and we truly appreciate the patience and understanding of those still waiting for restoration. Work remained active Tuesday evening, with additional members restored as crews continued setting transmission poles and completing remaining field work.

Wednesdays priorities include crews completing the remaining distribution pole replacements, while the primary focus remains on repairing and rebuilding the transmission system to restore service to all remaining affected members.

Given the severity and extent of the damage, rebuilding portions of the system will take time and some members in the hardest-hit areas may remain without power for a few days or into the weekend as crews complete the necessary repairs. As repairs continue, members may experience intermittent outages as crews work to safely rebuild and restore portions of the system.

ALSO.....

The City of Willcox has opened the City Council Chambers to the public as a cooling center for community members who remain without power. We greatly appreciate the City’s support of our community during the restoration effort.

AND Kimzey Road in Willcox is closed from MP 4.5 to MP 7.5 due to flooding.

Lets give a big thumbs πŸ‘ to our great SSVEC Crews and all those assisting Sulphur Springs Valley Electric Cooperative during this difficult time.

WILLCOX WELLS BACK O

WILLCOX WELLS BACK ONLINE β€” RESIDENTS STILL URGED TO CONSERVE WATER

πŸ“’ WATER FILL STATION AVAILABLE TONIGHTπŸ“’

WILLCOX, Ariz. β€” After a bad storm rolled through the town late Monday night/early Tuesday Morning, The City of Willcox says its wells are now operational and pumping water back into the city’s water system following the power outage impacting the well site.

While this is positive progress, residents and businesses are still being asked to conserve water. The city’s water storage tank needs time to refill and return to normal operating levels.

⚠️ WATER CONSERVATION REMAINS IMPORTANT

Residents are encouraged to limit non-essential water use, including irrigation and other high-volume uses, while the system recovers. Continued conservation will help the storage tank refill more quickly and maintain adequate water levels for the community.

According to the city, Sulphur Springs Valley Electric Cooperative (SSVEC) estimates permanent power could be restored to the well site within the next couple of days.

The City of Willcox Water Fill Station will be available tonight, August 11, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM for residential users.

City staff will be on-site to monitor usage. The limited hours are intended to provide residents access to water while allowing the city’s storage tank to continue recovering.

The City of Willcox also thanked several organizations and individuals who worked together to get the wells operational:

β€’ Arizona G&T Cooperatives (AZ G&T) for providing a generator, with special recognition to Cody Wilkerson for assisting with its connection
β€’ SSVEC for its quick response and support, including Daniel Wilson for helping coordinate efforts
β€’ Pacheco Electric for quickly responding and connecting the generator at the well site
β€’ City of Willcox water crews for their work throughout the outage to keep the water system operating

The city thanked residents and businesses for their patience, cooperation and continued conservation while crews work toward restoring normal operations.

Please share this update with friends, family and neighbors in the Willcox area so they are aware that conservation is still needed.

CoolFMLive will continue to provide updates as additional information becomes available.

SIERRA VISTA SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION CANCELED‼️ Sierra Vista School Board President Donald Lee joins Coolfmlive in this video to explain why.

Live and Local brought to you by Ed Morse Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Sierra Vista

Candidates for the Sierra Vista School Board will not be on this years ballot in Sierra Vista AZ this year. The election for two of the five seats on the board has been canceled because three of the four candidates failed to secure enough valid signatures to qualify for the November ballot Coolfmlive has learned. The Cochise County election recorders office did review all the candidates signatures and verified that not enough signitures were correct.

Current Board President Donald Lee was the only candidate to successfully meet the signature requirements. Consequently, pursuant to ARS 16-410, Mr. Lee will be appointed to retain his seat uncontested. The other three potential candidates who missed the ballot were J.P. Quinn, Shelby Weller, and Kaylei Young.

For two candidates it was mostly because the signitors were out of district or not registered to vote. The other candidate was mostly because people signed their petition before their Letter of Interest was certified. Although, they had some not registered and out of district signatures as well. All candidates were given an opportunity to prove their signatures were correct or had enough to validate. None of them could do so.

Mr. Lee shared the following statement regarding his requested review of the signatures to begin with:

For clarification, per ARS 16-351 any elector can challenge petition signatures. You must do your own investigation identifying each signature you wish to challenge. You then have to file this challenge with the Superior Court and pay a filing fee. All defendants including the County Recorder are served with the challenge to appear in court. The County Recorder then does a verification of all the challenged signatures. At the hearing each defendant is given the opportunity to remediate their signatures. If they cannot then the judge rules that they will not be on the ballot.

"I decided to review the signatures submitted by all of the candidates because I was aware that one candidate had begun collecting signatures before their Letter of Intent was posted. While that issue may have been remedied, I would not have known whether it had been corrected without reviewing the signatures. The other two candidates entered the race very late and had collected fewer signatures than I had. As I began verifying the signatures, it appeared to me that none of the other candidates had obtained enough valid signatures to qualify for the ballot. In my view, obtaining the required signatures is one of the first and most basic responsibilities of a candidate seeking public office. Candidates should be held accountable for meeting the established requirements, particularly when those requirements are intended to ensure that they have a minimum level of support from registered voters within the district. If a candidate cannot obtain the minimum number of valid signatures required to qualify for the ballot, I believe it is reasonable to question whether they have demonstrated the level of preparation, organization, and commitment necessary to serve in public office. How a candidate approaches the very first requirements of running for office can provide some insight into how they may approach the responsibilities of governing."

Because of this cancellation, the remaining open second school board seat will become vacant on January 1st 2027. Cochise County School Superintendent Jacqui Clay will soon be accepting applications and conducting interviews to fill the vacancy. All district residents, including the candidates who failed to qualify for the ballot, are eligible to apply. Interested individuals can contact Superintendent Clay's office at 520-803-3380 or visit in person at 4001 E. Foothills Drive, Suite A, Sierra Vista, AZ 85635. Clay emphasized that anyone who runs for school board needs to get at least 100 more signatures then required to better ensure they will make it on the ballot should someone challenge the signatures after filing.

This situation reflects a broader trend in the region, as 15 of the 22 local school districts will require at least one board appointment this cycle due to a lack of candidate filings. Superintendent Clay emphasized to Coolfmlive the critical need for more community members to step forward and lead our schools into the best future possible. Clay stated her office will advise and help train anyone interested in serving on any school board across Cochise County.

To recap and clarify further the Cochise County recorder did review all signatures and found the issue as well after Lee notified them of his findings. Any citizen can ask to review if signitures gathered are correct themselves but they must pay a fee to do so. After Lee looked over each signiture himself he found problems and further notified the County Recorders office who then verified his own findings. If Lee had not challenged any of the signatures then the candidates would have been allowed to still be on the ballot.

JUVENILE BOOKED IN B

JUVENILE BOOKED IN BOMB THREAT: 08/11/2026 SVPD responds to bomb threat

This morning at about 8:40 a.m., the Sierra Vista Police Department responded to Berean Academy for a report of a bomb threat.

During the investigation, officers learned that a student was overheard saying he had a bomb in his backpack. The school, following their policies, evacuated the students and staff and a perimeter was established around the campus by law enforcement.
