FLOCK CAMERAS CREDITED WITH HELPING WILLCOX POLICE
WILLCOX, Ariz. — The Willcox Police Department is highlighting two recent cases where Flock Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) cameras assisted officers, as debate continues over the use of the technology and privacy concerns surrounding it.
On August 5, Willcox Police received an Attempt to Locate for an elderly man suffering from dementia who was believed to be traveling toward Willcox. According to police, the man did not have a valid driver’s license and reportedly believed his family still lived in Oklahoma, although they had relocated to the Vail area.
Police Chief Dale Hadfield checked the city’s Flock system, which showed the man’s vehicle entering Willcox on South Haskell Avenue at approximately 3:18 p.m., with no indication it had left the city.
Hadfield later located the vehicle at the South Haskell Circle K. Police said the man was disoriented and experiencing significant symptoms of dementia. Officers coordinated with Cochise County Search and Rescue and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, and the man was safely returned home.
The technology was used again following the August 15 theft of a truck from a local motel. Police said a Flock camera captured the stolen vehicle traveling southbound on North Bisbee Avenue, with no additional sightings indicating it had left Willcox.
The following day, officers found the abandoned truck off East Patte Road. Evidence was collected before the vehicle was returned to its owner.
Chief Hadfield acknowledged that ALPR systems can be a “highly contested” piece of public safety equipment but said that when used properly and lawfully, they can help locate vulnerable individuals, recover stolen vehicles and assist investigations.
These incidents come as communities continue debating the balance between public safety and privacy surrounding automated license plate readers.
In these two cases, Willcox Police says the technology contributed to bringing a vulnerable elderly man home safely and recovering a stolen vehicle.
What do you think? Do examples like these change how you view Flock cameras in your community?

⚠️ PRESCRIBED BURN NOTICE: SMOKE MAY BE VISIBLE NEAR FORT HUACHUCA
FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. — Residents in Sierra Vista and surrounding areas may notice smoke coming from Fort Huachuca beginning Tuesday, August 18, as planned slash pile burning continues on the installation.
Fort Huachuca, in conjunction with the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management, plans to conduct burning beginning at approximately 8:00 a.m. Tuesday through Friday, August 21, depending on weather conditions.
Crews will initially continue work in the back of Split Rock Canyon. Toward the end of the week, officials anticipate completing the Split Rock burning and beginning operations in Tinker Canyon, located on the south range near the perimeter fence.
🔥 WHAT THE PUBLIC SHOULD KNOW:
• Smoke may be visible throughout much of the day.
• Smoke impacts to Fort Huachuca and Sierra Vista are expected to be minimal.
• No structures or power lines are expected to be threatened.
• Burning activities are dependent on weather conditions and may change accordingly.
These are planned and controlled slash pile burns, so residents who see smoke coming from these areas should be aware that it may be associated with the prescribed burning operations.
Fort Huachuca says slash pile burning is expected to continue throughout August, with weekly notifications provided regarding upcoming operations.

🚨 PALOMINAS SCHOOL BUS REKINDLES, CATCHES FIRE AGAIN TUESDAY MORNING
PALOMINAS, Ariz. — New information confirms that the school bus fire reported Tuesday morning, August 18, at Palominas Elementary School involved the same bus that caught fire Monday afternoon near South Kings Ranch Road and East Lane Ranch Road.
According to an update from the Palominas School District, the bus was moved to the district’s bus yard Monday evening following the original fire. The bus rekindled Tuesday morning and caught fire again.
The fire department responded and extinguished the fire. Fire personnel are inspecting the bus and surrounding area to ensure there is no remaining heat or smoldering material.
Importantly, the fire department has advised the district that it is safe to have a normal school day at Palominas Elementary School.
Monday’s original incident occurred while the bus was carrying a driver and five students. All were able to safely exit the bus.
The circumstances surrounding the original fire and subsequent rekindling remain under investigation.
CoolFMLive is continuing to gather additional information and will provide updates as more details become available.

CRITICAL RESCUE AT CARR CANYON FALLS REQUIRES HELICOPTER HOIST‼️
THANKFUL FOR OUR FIRST RESPONDERS: COMPLEX CARR CANYON RESCUE BRINGS MULTIPLE AGENCIES TOGETHER
COCHISE COUNTY, Ariz. — An incredibly difficult rescue at Carr Canyon Falls is highlighting the skill, teamwork and dedication of the first responders and search-and-rescue personnel who work to protect our community.
On Friday, August 14, at approximately 5:00 p.m., Cochise County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue was activated after a youth fell at Carr Canyon Falls and sustained critical injuries.
Personnel from Fry Fire District, Sierra Vista Fire & Medical Services, the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office and Search and Rescue were among the first to arrive. When first responders reached the youth, he was laying face first in water. He was assessed for injuries and began receiving medical care while additional rescue resources made their way to the difficult location.
Because of the severity of the injuries and challenging terrain, Arizona Department of Public Safety Air Rescue Ranger 2 was dispatched for a hoist extraction. Severe weather in the area reportedly prevented other civilian medical aircraft from responding.
When Ranger 2 arrived, a medic was lowered from the helicopter to the patient. The youth was secured in a specialized hoist bag and lifted, along with the medic, into the helicopter before being flown to a Tucson trauma center for further treatment.
This was a complicated rescue carried out under extremely challenging circumstances, and we want to take a moment to recognize everyone who answered the call.
THANK YOU to Fry Fire District, Sierra Vista Fire & Medical Services, Cochise County Sheriff’s Office personnel, CCSO Search and Rescue, Arizona DPS Air Rescue and all assisting personnel who worked together to reach, treat and safely extract this young patient.
Different uniforms. Different agencies. One mission — getting someone in need to the help they needed.
Carr Canyon Falls is one of Southern Arizona’s beautiful natural destinations, especially during monsoon season when the water is flowing. But conditions around the falls can become extremely dangerous. Rocks can be slippery even when dry and significantly more hazardous when wet.
Please use extreme caution, watch your footing, keep children closely supervised and never underestimate the terrain or rapidly changing monsoon weather.
Our thoughts are with the youth and their family as they continue through treatment and recovery.

🚨 PALOMINAS SCHOOL BUS CATCHES FIRE — DRIVER & SIX CHILDREN SAFE
PALOMINAS/HEREFORD, Ariz. — A Palominas School District bus caught fire late Monday afternoon, August 17, near the intersection of S. Kings Ranch Road and E. Lane Ranch Road.
According to information provided to CoolFMLive, the incident occurred at approximately 4:45 p.m. while the bus driver was turning the bus around. The bus reportedly experienced an engine failure before a fire broke out toward the rear of the vehicle.
The bus driver and all six children aboard were able to safely exit the bus. No injuries have been reported.
Witnesses in the area reported hearing what sounded like an explosion as the fire intensified, with at least one resident reporting that it could be felt from approximately half a mile away.
Firefighters responded to the scene as the bus became heavily involved in flames.
The Palominas School District reportedly had a replacement bus at the location within approximately 15 minutes to assist with getting the students where they needed to go.
At this time, the exact cause of the fire has not been officially confirmed beyond reports of an engine-related issue. This bus did have an inspection and passed as all busses with the District do.
