With a hint of comin

With a hint of coming weather, Mount Wrightson's distant silhouette found shelter from the glaring Sun's sinking globe.

I stood there, facing west, big sky pouring over me, watching day's ending argument. The only response I could offer was the gentle click-click of my camera's shutter - hoping that the right angles and settings were achieved.

Cruz, my Bronco Sport, spilled calming Celtic tunes over golden fields from his speakers, while shadow and light danced amongst the evening breezes.

Soon the colors would change, the shadows would deliver evening's veil of darkness, and the glow of March 8th would disappear into tomorrow.

That's the joy of presence - knowing that each moment, though fleeting, can be captured and frozen in a camera's belly, or a memory's archive.

With my memory often flawed, I'll default to Cam's chase for another evening's departure.

LONGTIME SIERRA VIST

LONGTIME SIERRA VISTA VETERAN PASSES: Larry Craig Stewart Obituary

Larry C. Stewart Larry Stewart, lovingly known to family and friends as Craig, departed this life on February 23, 2026. He was born on December 16, 1959, in Los Angeles, California to Gloria and Larry Van Stewart. Shortly after his birth the family moved to Leadville, Colorado where he and his siblings were raised. In 1980 he met the love of his life, Rose, whom he would go on to spend the next 45 years with. Together they raised 3 children, traveled the world and built a bond that will transcend death. He was preceded in death by his loving parents Larry Van & Gloria Dawn (Curtis) Stewart. He is survived by his devoted soulmate, Rosario Marie (Torres) Stewart, children Andrea Stewart & Charles Clark, Jennifer (Stewart) & Kevin King and Larry C. Stewart Jr. Grandchildren: Kasara (Stewart) & Jordan Ray, Xavier Stewart, Adam & Aurora King, and Roman Stewart-Clark. Great-Granddaughter, Kinley Ray. Siblings: Richard Stewart & Albert Garcia, Randy & Carrie Stewart, Lorrie Stewart and Ran Stewart & Kevin Williams. And numerous siblings-in-law, nieces and nephews in Utah and Colorado.

He joined the United States Army in 1983. His MOS was Tactical Satellite Operator; he ended his career in 505th Signal Battalion in 1993. He did 2 tours of duty in Germany, one in Mannheim and one in Karlsruhe. After his military retirement, he was an active and dedicated member of the American Legion Post 52. He was a member of 40/8 Voiture Locale 987 for 11 years. Post retirement he received a Bachelor of Computer Science from the University of Arizona. He was then employed as a government contractor beginning in 1996 and worked at Joint Interoperability Test Command on Fort Huachuca for 26 years until retirement. He received many honors and commendations during his career with the US Army and JITC, including a letter from the United States Attorney General praising his ability to restore communications after the attacks of September 11, 2001.

In the summer of 1980, his world changed forever when he met the woman who he would go on to spend the rest of his life with. Introduced by her sister, his beloved sister-in-law Irene, he knew within a few weeks Rose & Andrea would hold a special place in his heart. A whirlwind romance, he proposed on his birthday and they married March 7, 1981. They welcomed Jenna in December 1981 and Larry Jr in October 1987. Following their globetrotting, they settled in Sierra Vista, AZ in 1993 where they bought their forever home, nestled at the foot of the Huachuca Mountains. With their homebase far from their respective families, Craig & Rose found a surrogate family within the military community. Craig was a devoted fan of the Denver Broncos, a trait he shared with his late mother and enjoyed with Rose and Jenna. When he was younger, he enjoyed riding his motorcycle, skiing, and he painted several pictures that still hang in his home today. He enjoyed country and rock music, bowling, dancing with his beautiful wife and playing on his gaming systems, a hobby inherited by all his children and grandchildren. A firm believer in education, he ensured his children and grandchildren were provided every tool and opportunity to grow into independent and analytical thinkers.

He had a profound effect on everyone he met; he will be deeply missed. Interment ceremony will be at 11 AM Friday, March 13, 2026, at Southern Arizona Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery located at 1300 S Buffalo Soldier Trail. Celebration of life to follow immediately after at the American Legion Post 52, 12 E Theater Dr, Sierra Vista, AZ 85635. Monetary donations in his name can be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation supporting families of fallen first responders, military, and veterans.

This story was submi

This story was submitted by independent contributor, Scott Borgstadt.

What Do You See When You Look At Me? My name is Melissa Johnson.

I grew up with a father who struggled with alcoholism. He was often verbally abusive and would tell me I was ugly, stupid, good for nothing, and that I would never amount to anything. He was angry most of the time. My parents did not have a good marriage and were never affectionate with each other. My father's behavior was always worse when my mother wasn’t around. When I would hear my father’s car pull up I would get a knot in my stomach because I never knew which version of my dad would show up β€” the abusive one or the one who was somewhat okay. He stopped drinking when I was about 10 years old, but he never addressed the root cause of his behavior. When I was 17, I attended a party where I was attacked by a classmate and became pregnant. I was terrified to tell my parents, so I had an abortion. Shortly after I began drinking to numb the pain. A friend would bring a bottle of liquor from home and we would cut class to go drink in the back field behind our school.

I was desperate for attention and validation, so when anyone showed me interest, I followed that path. At 19, I became pregnant again. This time I knew I had to tell my parents. My boyfriend and I got married and at seven and a half months I went into labor and lost my baby
girl. I thought God hated me for having aborted my first child, so He took my baby. After that loss, my drinking escalated. I became a closet alcoholic, hiding it from my family and constantly looking for excuses to go home and drink. By the time I was 22 my husband and I were divorced.

After my failed marriage I moved to Florida, where I met someone who was very kind and charming. His father was a pastor and we attended church regularly. About a year later I became pregnant, and I gave birth to a healthy baby girl. I was so happy with our little family. When my daughter was about three or four months old, the abuse began. He became very controlling and physically abusive. I stayed in that relationship because I wanted nothing more than for my daughter to have her daddy. When my daughter was about a year and half I was pregnant with my second child. One evening when I was about 6 weeks pregnant my daughter walked in and witnessed her dad hitting me and asked, β€œMommy, what Daddy doing to you?” The look on her face broke my heart. At that moment, I knew I had to leave. I called the police and had him arrested. I left that night with my one-and-a-half-year-old daughter and six weeks pregnant.

I moved back to New York and lived with my mom. About a year after I had my son I started dating again and I found myself in the abusive cycle again and again, relationship after relationship. I hated myself and I turned to alcohol once again to numb the pain. I met a
wonderful man who truly loved me and my kids. He proposed to me in December of 1999, but he died suddenly in January of 2000 from a pulmonary aneurysm. I was devastated. I felt like God was punishing me for all of my bad decisions. After I lost my fiance, the pain became too much for me to handle and once again I turned to alcohol. But, this time vodka wasn’t enough to numb the pain, so I started mixing the alcohol with 4-5 Percocets almost every night. That went on for about 2-3 years.

My rock bottom came when I passed out on the sofa and woke up to my daughter crying and saying, β€œMommy, I thought you were dead.” That moment broke me. I realized my children were experiencing the same pain I had experienced growing up with an alcoholic parent. That was the last night I took pills, but I still continued to drink.
A few months later, I started dating someone and we got married 8 months later. I knew I had no business getting married because I was so broken. The marriage was a disaster pretty much from the beginning. He was a narcissist and emotionally and verbally abusive, and I was just a mess.

Four years later I became pregnant with my youngest son and decided to fight for the marriage. I didn’t want my son to grow up without his father like my older children. About three months after my son was born, I was diagnosed with uterine cancer and had to undergo a full hysterectomy. While I was recovering at home, my husband would complain about having to take care of me and everything else at home. One evening during the first week of me being back home I asked him to get me something to eat - he yelled at me and said, β€œI’ve been working all day and now I have to cook your food.” During that time is when I started seeking God again and began asking Him to change me and show me why I continued the cycle of abuse. It took about two years before I decided to end the marriage. However, because we were broke, we ended up living together for nearly three more years. During that time, God gave me the vision for Anchor House. He even gave me the name. I remember thinking, β€œI can’t even help myself - how am I ever going to be able to help another woman?” Eventually, I was able to move out and begin the healing process. For about three more years, I allowed others to help me. I immersed myself in God’s Word and allowed the Holy Spirit to guide me. It wasn’t easy, but I knew I didn’t want to continue to go around the same mountain again. I knew God had something more for my life. I never turned to alcohol again after I had my youngest son.

In December of 2014, I met my current husband. We had known each other from school. A friend created a dating profile for me, but I had no interest in being in a relationship and was deleting all the messages I received. One day I was about to delete another message when it opened and I saw his face. We started talking and eventually began seeing each other. About a month later on New Year’s Eve, we attended a church service where the pastor asked if any real men would give up their seats for the ladies standing in the back. My husband leaned over and quietly told me he was going to let someone have his seat but that he would stay close so he could watch over me. At that moment, I knew I loved him. I shared my vision for Anchor House with my husband early on in our marriage, but it wasn’t
until we moved to Arizona in September of 2021 that God completely healed the pain and insecurities in my heart. In 2023, God brought the vision for Anchor House back to me and I had a sense of urgency that I couldn’t let go of. I told my husband we needed to meet with our pastor and share the vision God gave me.

In June of 2023, Anchor House became a reality. Anchor House assists single mothers by providing rental and utility assistance, emergency hotel stays, and other support a single mother might need during a difficult time. Anchor House exists to fill the gap β€” not to provide 100% support β€” but to help when someone hits a bump in the road and needs help getting back on track.

My advice to others is this: God can turn any situation around. With God all things are possible. When a mom comes to us they feel overwhelmed and are at the end of their rope. So many of them have experienced trauma and abuse and are just so tired. I remind them that they are beautiful and strong and they will make it through the difficult times. God is our way maker and we want to come alongside these women and hold their hand through the process. Sometimes all we can do is be there, support them, and encourage them until they are ready to move forward.

We all make mistakes, but God never gives up on us. And that is what Anchor House is about
β€” never giving up on people.
