🚨 FIRST NEW SCREWWORM CASE CONFIRMED IN ARIZONA — FOUND IN COCHISE COUNTY DOG 🚨

COCHISE COUNTY, Ariz. — Arizona has confirmed its first case of New World screwworm, and the detection was made right here in Cochise County.

The case involves a dog living on a ranch in Cochise County. Federal officials confirmed the infection Wednesday, October 28, after samples from the animal were tested at a USDA veterinary laboratory.

New World screwworm is a parasitic fly whose larvae can infest wounds and feed on the living tissue of warm-blooded animals. It can affect livestock, horses, pets and wildlife and, more rarely, humans.

The parasite is particularly concerning to ranchers and livestock producers because an untreated infestation can cause severe wounds, serious illness and potentially death.

Federal and state animal health officials are responding to the Cochise County detection. According to the USDA, response measures include establishing a 20-kilometer infested zone around the detection, placing controls on animal movement within the affected area, increasing surveillance and trapping, releasing sterile flies and conducting outreach to veterinarians, livestock producers and communities.

For pet and livestock owners, officials are emphasizing vigilance rather than panic.

Animal owners should regularly inspect their animals, particularly around open wounds, cuts, surgical sites or other skin injuries. Suspicious wounds, maggots or signs of an infestation should be reported immediately and evaluated by a veterinarian.

The New World screwworm had previously been eradicated from the United States but has been moving north through Central America and Mexico. Cases have since been detected in the United States, including Texas and New Mexico. Earlier this month, additional cases were confirmed in southwestern New Mexico near the Arizona state line.

The risk to people remains very low, according to federal health officials, and there have been no reported locally acquired human infestations in the United States during the current outbreak.

This is a developing situation, particularly for Cochise County’s ranching and agricultural communities.
