⚖️ MASON ROSE SENTENCED IN FATAL 2025 U.S. 191 COLLISION‼️
Cochise County Attorney Lori Zucco has announced the sentencing of Mason Rose, 37, in connection with a fatal head-on collision on U.S. Highway 191 that resulted in the death of Araceli Esparza.
According to the Cochise County Attorney’s Office, Rose was sentenced on two counts involving Negligent Homicide and Aggravated Driving Under the Influence.
Rose received a seven-year prison term for Count 1, Negligent Homicide, and a four-month term with a 10-year probation tail for Count 2, Aggravated Driving Under the Influence. The prison terms are to run concurrently in the Arizona Department of Corrections.
The case stems from a collision on February 28, 2025, on U.S. Highway 191. According to information released by the County Attorney’s Office, Rose was traveling southbound in a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado when he crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a northbound 2010 Chrysler 300 driven by Esparza.
Esparza died as a result of the collision.
Rose was transported to a hospital in Douglas for medical evaluation following the crash. According to the County Attorney’s Office, a toxicology report showed a blood alcohol concentration of .090. The office also reported that Rose admitted to consuming multiple alcoholic beverages the previous night.
The case was investigated by the Arizona Department of Public Safety, including Trooper Kyle Mahoney, and prosecuted by Cochise County Deputy County Attorney Terisha Driggs.
The Esparza family also provided a statement remembering Araceli not simply for the circumstances of her death, but for the life she lived and the impact she had on those who loved her.
“More than anything, we want our community to remember that Araceli was so much more than the circumstances surrounding her death. She was a person with a life, a family, a personality, a beautiful spirit, and people who loved her deeply.
What happened to her is part of her story, but it is not who she was. To us, she will always be Araceli, and the love she gave our family and the memories she left behind will always be greater than the tragedy that took her from us. We thank God for her life every single day and we were blessed to have lived a life beside her.”
The family described Araceli as a deeply loved daughter, sister, aunt and family member who was loving, caring and protective. They remembered her vibrant personality, beautiful smile, curly hair, memorable laugh and the love and memories she left with her family.
Our thoughts are with the Esparza family and all those who continue to mourn Araceli’s loss.

Whetstone Firefighters Answer the Call: Local Crew Deploys to Battle California Wildfires
WHETSTONE, Ariz. — Demonstrating the true spirit of service and regional solidarity, four members of the Whetstone Fire District have answered the call for help, deploying across state lines to battle active blazes in California.
The local crew is currently serving on assignment with the Arizona State Task Force (AZS3), working shoulder-to-shoulder with neighboring personnel from St. Johns Fire, Tri City Fire, Mayer Fire, and Mohave Fire.
Representing Whetstone on the front lines are:

Captain Kenneth Spencer
Firefighter William Moreno
Firefighter Salvador Estrella
Initially dispatched to the Cleveland National Forest, the crew tackled the Bouquet Fire, which scorched approximately 1,000 acres. They have since transitioned to the Danny Fire—a blaze that grew to roughly 150 acres and is now reported at 96% containment thanks to the relentless efforts of interagency crews.
Wildland firefighting demands extraordinary endurance, teamwork, and sacrifice. Operating in rugged terrain far from their families, these firefighters are doing what Arizona first responders do best: putting community and service above self.
The Whetstone Fire District expressed immense pride in their four members, thanking them for representing their home district with honor and professionalism. The community joins in wishing the entire crew—and all firefighters on the line—strength, safe operations, and a swift return home.
