Remembering Gary Nerud: A True Cowboy of Cochise County (1943-2025)

The local communities and the Spur Western Wear family mourn the passing of Gary Nerud, a dedicated rancher, a real cowboy, beloved husband, and pillar of the local Western life, who passed away peacefully at his home on the night of Tuesday, December 9th, 2025.

Gary was born to the cowboy life and lived it fully every day. Born on June 28, 1943, in a home located at his family's ranch near Bayard, Nebraska, he carried the spirit of the West from the very beginning. This heritage was shown by him riding his horse to and from school from 1st through 7th grade in a single-room schoolhouse—just like in the Western movies. Anytime he had the chance, he was riding his horse, exploring the desert and mountains in his community, embodying the cowboy spirit daily. His passions included:

Helping the community and fellow cowboys Raising cattle and breaking horses
Cowboy Poetry and Western sports like roping and Cowboy Polo.

Gary settled in Cochise County the day after high school. He and his wife, Sonja, shared a beautiful 62-year marriage after meeting on a blind date. They were a true team, building the foundation of Spur Western Wear stores in Sierra Vista, Tucson, Tombstone, and Benson. Gary was the skilled craftsman—the carpenter, framer, electrician, and plumber—who physically built the stores, and he also handled the accounting and finances. Sonja managed the operations, decor, and merchandise.

Known for his gentle nature, honesty, and unwavering support for Sonja, Gary was a devoted partner, always working side by side with her, no matter the task. Up until his final days, his profound love for his wife was evident, offering her the "OK" sign as his final gesture of approval when he could no longer speak.

Gary Nerud leaves behind a legacy defined by hard work, devotion, and the authentic Western way of life.

Sonja welcomes anyone who wishes to share a memory, condolences, or just to stop by and talk with her. Flowers, condolences, or donations may be made at the Spur Western Wear store in Sierra Vista.
